I get asked two questions at Perth Magic on a regular basis. One is if there's a magic shop in Perth. Regretfully, there's not and it doesn't look good for one to open in the future. We have to rely on the magic shops "over east" or the traveling magic vendor to stop by Perth. Don't laugh. That does happen more than you might imagine. There are at least 4 magic shops from over east that make the trip here on occasion and they'll keep doing ot as long as the word gets out that they're in town. The second question is whether or not there's a magic club in Perth. There is and it's the subject of my next column here. Watch for it.
Many of you visit this site and are also on a mailing list to be kept informed of magic news here in Perth. At least twice monthly, the mailing lists get active with news of upcoming magic club meetings, lectures in Perth or about visiting magicians passing through Perth. Public shows by local magicians, magic on the television or events sponsored by the West Australian Society of Magicians(WASM) are always being passed on to those interested. If you're reading this and want to be added to a mailing list about the goings on of magic in Perth, send me an

and I'll put you on the list most appropriate for you desires. Be sure to let me know what your interest in magic is so I can best help. Don't worry about being flooded with e-mail. It's a low volume list with only very relevant magic related information.
Magic shops on the Internet have by and large replaced the local magic shop in many cities. I lament the passing of those shops which were almost all established as a labor of love rather than with a strict profit motive. Sure, they all want to make money but some were actually created by magicians with no need of income from a magic shop. A case in point is the magic shop Martinka's in New York City, which was originally founded by Harry Houdini, one of the most famous magicians in history. For nearly 100 years now, Martinka's has been trading under a number of different owners, some of whom are nearly as famous as Harry Houdini.
In Perth, the lack of a magic shop is due in large part to the small number of professional and serious amateur magicians. There just aren't enough to support a magic shop but that hasn't stopped some rather heroic attempts. It's been over 10 years since the last shop closed its doors for good and now, the best Perth has to offer is a magic club. But what a club it is!
In my next installment of On Magic, I'll discuss the local club and what it means to me and I hope to other magicians here in Perth. Just to whet your appetite for more, this club is one of the most active clubs I have been a member of in my nearly 50 years of performing magic all over the world. It's been an active club for over 80 years now and it grows better every year.
See you next time!

Max has been a diver, diving instructor and wreck diver for decades now.
Max, along with the noted historian and newspaper columnist Hugh Edwards , was responsible for discovering and
documenting the history surrounding the Batavia - one of
Australia's most famous shipwrecks. He also helped to document the
first automobile driven in Western Australia when he recovered one
of the wheels to the original machine. The book, Pioneers of the Road, by
the late John Clydesdale, tells the story.
Max, PerthMagic wishes to congratulate you personally for this important and well deserved
recognition of your life's work. Well done!
